Research
The role of extraction faulting and out-of-sequence thrusting in collisional orogeny
My PhD studies deal with the structural evolution of major shear zones and first-order nappe contacts during ongoing collisional orogeny. The detailed reconstruction of shearing events along tectonic contacts is an important step in reconstructing the original structural and paleogeographical position of nappes and the sequence of thrusting.
My study area is located in the Swiss-Italian Western Alps (Pennine Alps) where a stack of ocean- and continent-derived nappes from the Piemont-Ligurian paleogeographic domain is exposed. These are from bottom to top the eclogite-facies Zermatt-Saas zone, the blueschist- to greenschist-facies Combin zone and the polymetamorphic Dent Blanche nappe.
My aim is to determine the geometry and relative timing of deformation phases to deduce the structural evolution of the Penninic nappe stack and to draw conclusions on the kinematics of large-scale shear zones in collisional orogens in general. Special focus lies on the still poorly understood mechanisms that lead to the exhumation of deeply buried rocks, as in this case, (ultra)high-pressure rocks of the Zermatt-Saas zone.
An important part of my work is the analysis of shear zones and associated structures in the field. The examination of shear fabrics and microstructures in thin section as well as texture analysis by x-ray texture goniometry give further information on the geometry and kinematics during deformation. I also use techniques of metamorphic petrology like electron microprobe analysis and thermodynamic modelling to constrain pressure-temperature conditions during deformation as well as geochronology to date the timing of high-pressure metamorphism.
