Scientific Interests

Characterization of metamorphic processes; petrogenesis of metasomatic rocks; formation and evolution of Precambrian high-grade terrains (northern Baltic Shield, southern Madagascar, Sri Lanka, eastern and southern Peninsular India); chemical dating of metamorphic processes; microscopy of deposits in lignite-fired generators; polarized light microscopy.

As research in India formed a major part of my scientific activities during the past three decades, thematic topics and projects are documented below in some detail. Projects were funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), Volkswagen-Stiftung, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung.

Research in the western Dharwar Craton and the Southern Granulite Terrain focused on the characterization of P,T,Xfluid-regime of regional metamorphism, the structurally-controlled phenomena of “arrested charnockitization”, and the mineralogy/ petrology of selected lithologies. The studies were conducted in collaboration with colleagues from the universities of Varanasi, Mysore and the CESS, Trivandrum.

  • Regional P-T gradients of early Proterozoic metamorphism in the Western Dharwar Craton (Raith et al. 1983; Raase et al., 1986).
  • Petrogenesis of charnockite/enderbites of the Nilgiri Hills (Raith et al. 1990; Srikantappa et al., 1992; Raith et al. 1999).
  • In-situ charnockite formation in gneiss-granulite transition zones through localized fluid infiltration-induced dehydration processes (Kabbaldurga: Stähle et al., 1987; Kerala-Khondalite Belt: Raith & Srikantappa, 1993; Eastern Ghats Belt: Dobmeier & Raith, 2000).
  • Generation of leucogranitic melts- a case study from the Kerala Khondalite Belt (Braun et al., 1996).
  • Characterization of UHT-metamorphism in the southern granulite terrain, based on reaction textures in high Mg,Al-granulites (Lal et al. 1984; Raith et al. 1997)

Recent work in the Southern Granulite Terrain (in collaboration with V. Schenk & S. Brandt, Kiel; C. Srikantappa, Mysore; P. Sengupta, Kolkata) is focused on the crustal evolution of the southern granulite terrain, with particular emphasis on the Madurai Block.

Research in the Eastern Ghats Belt (EGB) focuses on the polychronous crustal evolution of this important Proterozoic orogenic belt. The studies provided insights into the petrogenesis and physico-chemical behaviour of specific rock systems and contributed to the reconstruction of the terrane configuration during the amalgamation of the supercontinents Rodinia and Gondwana. New concepts on the internal architecture and crustal evolution of this important polychronous orogenic belt were formulated (Dobmeier & Raith, 2003). Projects in the EGB were conducted in collaboration with colleagues from the IIT Kharagpur, the Jadavpur University Kolkata and the Central Laboratory for Geochronology, University of Münster.

  • Petrogenesis of megacrystic granitoids (Mukhopadhyay, 1995; Krause, 1998).
  • Petrogenesis of massif-type anorthosites (Bhattacharya et al. 1998; Maji et al. 1998; Raith et al. 1998; Krause et al., 2001).
  • Petrogenesis and geodynamic implications of Mesoproterozoic rift-related magmatism (Upadhyay et al. 2006; Upadhyay 2008).
  • Reconstruction of the polyphase metamorphic evolution (P,T,X-paths) of UHT-granulites in key localities (Dasgupta et al., 1997, 1999; Sengupta et al., 1997, 1999; Rickers et al., 2001; Sengupta & Raith, 2001; Raith et al. 2007; Sengupta et al. 2008).
  • Timing and spatial disposition of poly-metamorphism in the Eastern Ghats Belt through systematic EPMA-dating of monazite (Dobmeier & Simmat, 2001; Simmat & Raith, 2008).
  • Timing of sedimentation and UHT-HT metamorphism in the Eastern Ghats Belt (Upadhyay et al. 2009).· Identification of crustal domains of contrasting evolutionary history based on regional Sm-Nd, Rb-Sr whole rock systematics of metasediments and orthogneisses/granitoids as well as the Pb-Pb systematics of feldspar (Rickers, 2000; Rickers et al., 2001),
  • Identification of the Western Charnockite Zone as a composite terrain of late Archaean and Palaeo/Mesoproterozoic igneous provinces (Kovach et al., 1999).
