Current Scientific Interests

M. M. Raith held the chair of petrology at the Mineralogical-Petrological Institute (Steinmann Institut) of Bonn University and went into active retirement in 2005. Since then, he continues his research on the petrology and evolution of high-grade Precambrian continental crust with a focus on southern and eastern India. As an outcome of his years of teaching experience his Leitfaden zur Dünnschliffmikroskopie (co-authored by P. Raase and J. Reinhardt, and available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese translations as an open-access publication; has become a standard text for microscopy courses worldwide. In recent years the archaeometric investigation of ancient ceramics initiated by archaeologists Paul Yule (Late Roman amphorae from Aqaba and Yemen; Elamite and Achaemenid glazed artefacts from Iran) and Maria Shinoto (Sue stoneware, southern Japan; firing experiments) has opened a new field of research activity. The analytical and experimental archaeometric work is carried out in cooperation with his colleagues at the Steinmann Institute (B. Spiering: EPMA; H. Euler: XRD; S.-O. Franz: XRF; G. Oleschinski: SEM).
